Welcome to Fjonesundet !

Fjone is a small community of some 120 inhabitants in the municipality of Nissedal. Rock carvings and burial mounds testify to 5000 years of human habitation in this area.
The first thing you notice when you visit Fjone is Nisser; 25 miles (40 km) long and 820 ft (250m) deep; it is the largest lake in Telemark. In its setting amid high rugged mountains, the clear blue waters of this lake are the source of drinking water for the surrounding region.
On the Fjone side of Nisser lie miles of beautiful sandy beaches – perhaps the most extensive swimming eldorado in southern Norway. In order that everyone may enjoy the beauty of the nature around Nisser, we have prepared a wide selection of marked walking trails through the forest and mountain terrain up to the high country.
The Fjone ferry “M/F Nissen” is Norway’s last cable ferry and takes cars, busses and passengers across Nisser at its narrowest point in the months of May to December. Ferrywoman Åshild Sollid also has her own handcraft and knitting cottage plus café on the Fjone side
